How do I request/look for a particular physical item?

Ask us to pull items from the shelves for you! Just find your items in the online catalog and choose "Place Hold". We will email you when the items are ready for pickup.

1. Start at the McConnell Library homepage, locate the search box (located under the image), select the "Catalog" tab, then start searching:

2. Once you have found an item that you want, click on the title of the item to open the full record.

3. Select the "Place Hold" button and request your item.

  • Select the relevant pickup location: McConnell, RUCL, TRC, English (English dept. materials only).
  • *Items sent from one campus to the other will be quarantined for 5 days at the recipient campus before they can be picked up.

Note: If the record indicates the item is available, the staff will pull it as soon as possible. If it is checked out, you will not be able to get the item until it has been returned and quarantined.

How can I set up a library account to renew books, place hold requests, and see my checkouts?

How do I arrange to pick up my item(s) with minimal contact at the library?

Pick up your holds without entering the main part of the library. Stop in the lobby and call the Front Desk at (540) 831-5364 to let us know that you’ve arrived. We’ll bring your holds to the lobby, you’ll show us your ONE Card, and you’ll be on your way.
